[Unsigned Watercolour View of the Town and Harbour of Alexandria with Pompey's Pillar and the Attarine Mosque in the Foreground, Titled:] Alexandria, Egypt.
[Alexandria, Egypt, ca. 1870]. Watercolour on paper ca. 23,5x33,5 cm (9 ¼ x 13 ¼ in). A very good watercolour, mounted in a recent mat. This attractive bright watercolour by an unknown artist shows the town and harbour of Alexandria with Pompey's Pillar and the Attarine Mosque in the foreground. "Pompey's Pillar is a Roman triumphal column in Alexandria, Egypt, and the largest of its type constructed outside of the imperial capitals of Rome and Constantinople. The only known free-standing column in Roman Egypt which was not composed of drums, it is one of the largest ancient monoliths and one of the largest monolithic columns ever erected" (Wikipedia).
